The session was addressed by Professor Dr. V.V. Binoy who is currently an assistant professor in the department of Natural Sciences and Engineering, National Institute of Advanced studies. The guest was introduced by Amrita from I MSc.
Dr. Binoy shed light upon the topic- “Science communication and climate change”. It was an open discussion in which students were allowed to ask as well as answer various questions. The talk started off with him introducing us to the idea of science and how science has helped us change our perspective about certain things. However, he made us realize that while making scientific progress or discovery, the human mind is often not considered. His research area focuses on the cognitive skills and effect of various factors on human mind as well as other living creatures. He talked about the various research that were being conducted by his team across various places in India which focused on the cognitive skills of children and how it helped build a scientific temperament in them. It was followed by a discussion on one of the most important topics of current days which is ‘climate change’. Climate change as described by Dr. Binoy is a result of unprecedented and reckless behavior of humans and the best we can do is to practice sustainability. He gave a few real-life examples of students practicing sustainable development like the water plant set up by students in Kerala This talk inspired many people to follow a path that would benefit everyone.
